Adequate

Sometimes you feel like a particle of dust
sometimes you feel like a particle of dust is some colossal craggy planet whirling through the ether to smash you into bits
where you stand
minuscule on a wandering electron
sometimes you feel like a space whale
crashing through the cosmos
eating up galaxies like so much krill
sometimes you feel adequate
sometimes you feel like one little person in a great big world
and you are

Sometimes you feel invisible
sometimes you feel like the echo of a ghost of a shadow of someone who walked this way long long ago
like someone could reach through you
and it would only vaguely ache
sometimes you feel like a shock of bright graffiti
walking the streets like a vivid scream
and no one can look away
sometimes you feel adequate
sometimes you feel weighty and real
and you are

Sometimes you feel like trash
sometimes you feel like a used paper coffee cup wheeling it’s way to the gutter on a breath of stormy wind
and the last thing that will fill you
is a gulp of acid rain
sometimes you feel like heaven isn’t good enough
to reward your benevolent heart
and pioneering mind
sometimes you feel adequate
sometimes you feel the innate goodness of your being soak through to your surface like strawberry coulis on a sponge cake
and you can’t deny your longings to quell the torments of your people
or your longings to make the same silly mistakes in the name of pleasure
or your longings to plant flowers in the tarmac
or to lambast all your enemies
or to build bridges to the bridgeless
or to burn them
or to conquer the world
or to save it
sometimes you feel human
and you are
